Unlock Insights Into Your Health Through The Refined Touch Of Pulse Diagnosis

Pulse diagnosis in Traditional Chinese Medicine is far more than monitoring heart rate. It is a sophisticated, tactile language that reveals core imbalances in energy (Qi), blood flow, organ function, and systemic harmony. At Adam Atman Acupuncture in Campbell, CA, this ancient art is offered as a foundational diagnostic tool that informs deeply personalized care.

How I Take The Pulses

When you come to my clinic I will initially ask you not to tell me anything about your health.  I want to see what I can figure out without any preconceptions.  I will feel the pulse at three distinct positions on each wrist. Interpreting the pulse depth, strength, quality and rhythm I can discern imbalances in blood flow, fluid dynamics, energy level, and organ function. This enables me to assess your overall state of health, and look into specific disease processes, injuries and imbalances. I will tell you what I am finding and check in with you to see if it makes sense to you! After I have finished the pulse assessment, which takes about ten minutes, you can tell me anything I missed and anything and everything you want help with. One of the great strengths of the TCM healthcare system is that we can treat multiple issues simultaneously, and indeed we do expect everything to improve over the course of treatment.

The Complexity Behind The Pulse

Unlike conventional pulse checks that prioritize beats per minute, TCM pulse diagnosis examines multiple pulse qualities, including attributes like wiry, slippery, hollow, spongy etc. Each quality correlates with different physiological states or pathological conditions. For instance, a thin rapid pulse may indicate Yin deficiency or systemic heat, while a slow and deep pulse could reflect cold, damp retention, blood stagnation or depleted Qi, etc. Here is an example of why this ancient technique normally creates superior results:

In modern medicine 10 patients may be told they have migraines, but from a TCM point of view, each of these migraines may have a different set of causative factors. In some patients the migraine may be coming from sinus issues, in some patients from chronic muscle tension in the neck, in some patients the migraine is related to lack of blood volume, in some patients it is too much internal heat and inflammation arising from the stomach or the liver. Each of these causative factors responds to a different treatment strategy! One size does not fit all. By taking the pulses I can understand these causative factors, and build a treatment strategy to neutralize these factors with the correct herbal prescription and acupuncture point selection, and thus elicit a cure. This ancient diagnostic tool remains a cornerstone of acupuncture and the TCM healing system.

Why Pulse Diagnosis Matters In Silicon Valley

In the fast-paced environment of Silicon Valley, where chronic stress, burnout, and metabolic imbalances are common, pulse diagnosis offers a window into the body’s internal resilience. In addition, by identifying imbalances before they manifest as overt symptoms, TCM pulse reading can also serve as an early warning system and intervention tool for optimizing health and performance. There is a saying in ancient TCM that seeking treatment when one is already sick is like beginning to dig a well when one is already thirsty!

These ancient diagnostic techniques I practice actually align well with the tech community’s data-driven mindset, and with science based diagnostic inquiry, enabling us to create wellness strategies that harness the best of both systems.
